Why backups matter
Your recovery seed (12 or 24 words) is the absolute master key to funds. If your Trezor® is lost or damaged, the seed is the only safe recovery method. Plan backups at the time of your trezor start to avoid rushed or insecure choices later.
Paper vs Metal backups
Paper is convenient but vulnerable to physical damage and theft. Metal backups (stamped plates, engraved kits) resist fire, water, and long-term degradation, making them a superior option for long-term cold storage.
Geographic redundancy & labeling
Store backups in two or more secure locations, ideally in different regions. Label backup containers discreetly (avoid "crypto" wording). Use bank safety deposit boxes or trusted custodians where appropriate.
- Test recovery with a small restore before trusting it fully.
- Consider Shamir (S.S.S.) or multisig for advanced resilience.
- Document who has access to backups and how to proceed in emergencies.
Backups are a critical part of any trezor start — choose a strategy that matches the value you hold and your risk tolerance.
